Changes in Latitudes...

One of Jimmy Buffet's popular songs features lyrics of "changes in latitude, changes in attitude...nothing remains quite the same..." That sort of applies to the current state of business in 2010. For sure, nothing has remained "the same" from a few years ago. Sales goals, budgets and morale have generally "gone south" in the last year as well....but there's the challenge AND the opportunity!

Yes, I'm stealing this graphic (it's just too perfect). Sadly, I know (some personally) there are people on the edge of anxiety and depression issues. Uncertainty has a way of making life a daily grind and a combat for survival. If you're charged with relationship building or human resources, you'll know that attitude makes all the difference in the world. Perhaps the time is ripe to make an investment toward a positive mindset? In fact, I know of at least one expert that makes a compelling point that having a positive attitude; that happiness is a basic human obligation toward all others in society. Unhappy people with negative demeanors have no right to inflict their gloom on others. Want to see more; here's a great 5 minute thought provoking video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQqJvfh9irs

On the flip side is conquering challenge. Basketball legend John Wooden said "There is no great fun, satisfaction or joy derived from doing something that's easy". How true is that! Yes times are tougher than 2 years ago; but personally, I'm embracing it. In 5 years from now the sense of accomplishment helping others -- some complete strangers -- navigate and prosper through the uncertainty will be all the more rich.

This fellow isn't just doing his job; he faced down a challenge and succeeded. Maybe he overcame budget restrictions, found a great new perspective that's more efficient, landed a huge target client, or is rejoicing in achievement beyond his peers. No difference, his reaction isn't appropriate for anything less than triumph...and that is contingent on overcoming obsticles and a challenge.

The question becomes "which person do we want to be?" It is a choice. Keyboard headbanger slumping home every night after spreading gloom or someone that views adversity as a true opportunity to achieve something worthy of celebrating.

It may not be easy; but it certainly can be fun. It's no time to hide; let's make the balance of 2010 a great ride!
